Description:

Play is an often ignored but essential component of a successful child-teacher relationship and vibrant classroom.  Stuart Brown (2009) contends that the spontaneous and mutual delight between a child and parent or a teacher and child constitutes a state of play and that the connection is evolutionarily wired to occur.  From this perspective, creating safe and secure relationships with children and being engaged in play are inextricably intertwined.  A secure relationship is the foundation for all learning and with young children this means being engaged in play-full interactions.  As Landreth (2009) noted, “Children’s natural language is play.”

We have long known that interactions with parents and other adults are important in a child’s life and findings from neuroscience are now showing us that the child’s “environment of relationships,” is the raw material that builds the brain’s architecture, one encounter at a time.  Evidence shows that the quality of interpersonal interactions and relationships actually shapes brain circuits and lays the foundation for later developmental outcomes, from academic performance to mental health and interpersonal skills (Cozolino, 2010; Siegel, 2007).

The presenters will discuss how play enhances the creation of relationships and supports healing for children dealing with every day or more significant crises.  Finding showing the decline in time to play and in the valuing of play over time will be shared. The presenters will introduce innovative findings from neuroscience to show the relationship between playful interactions and building  relationships that promote growth across all developmental domains for all learners.

Description:

The Institute of Medicine is pleased to announce a new workshop on Investing in Young Children Globally: The Cost of Inaction.

An ad hoc committee will plan and conduct an interactive public workshop featuring presentations and discussions that highlight opportunities for scientifically grounded investments in young children globally. Investments will be broadly conceived to include allocations of economic, natural, social, and other resources that sustain or promote human development and well-being. Speakers will explore the question of whether the science converges on a set of universal elements that support optimal development from preconception to age 8. Intersections across health, education, nutrition, living conditions and social protection will be explored. Speakers will address elements that may vary by geographic context and issues impacting diverse populations including children with disabilities. The science will be highlighted by a set of research presentations focused on interrelated themes of promoting optimal development through investing in young children and the potential economic consequences of inaction. The contexts of child development, including families and caregivers as well as culture and community, will be considered. The committee will identify specific topics to be addressed, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and other participants, and moderate the discussions. An individually-authored summary of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
