NCERT Issues New Nursery Guidelines | Here’s What You Should Know

NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) has for the first time issued guidelines for pre-schools. Earlier, there were no guidelines by NCERT for primary schools and the schools were free to choose their own curriculum and have their own timings. However, in an effort to get the primary education in India in an ordered way, the National Council of Educational Research and Training has laid down certain guidelines for all primary schools having play way, nursery and kg classes.
 
From minimum age requirements to the educational qualification of teachers and from daily class timings to what a child should be taught, NCERT has laid some rules that need to be followed by all primary schools. Here are some highlights fromNational Council of Educational Research and Training guidelines that everyone should know.
 

National Council of Educational Research and Training Nursery Guidelines

As per the Nursery guidelines by NCERT, the minimum age for admission to the nursery class in any pre-school should be 3 years. The guidelines further state that every class should have a child teacher ratio at 1 : 25. This means that there should be 1 teacher for every 25 students in a class. The teachers who teach primary classes must have passed 12th class and hold a diploma in primary teaching.
 
Earlier, The Ministry of Women and Child Development had released a policy on early childhood care in the year 2013. This is the first time that NCERT(National Council of Educational Research and Training) has issued a document for primary teaching methodology.
 

Infrastructure Recommendations by NCERT 

As per NCERT, a pre-school should be located away from traffic, ponds, wells, ditches or any uncovered drains. Every school should have an outdoor play area, separate toilets for boys and girls and should be under CCTV camera surveillance. Further, it has been stated that the standard size of a classroom in a preschool should be – 8 sqm by 6 sqm and easily accommodate 25 students.
 
The guidelines for nursery by NCERT also talks about what a child should know after 1 year of education and what he/she should know after 2 years of education. The roles of teacher, principal and helpers have also been defined.
 
This is a great step for Indian education system. There was a need for such guidelines so that our kids can do well under the guidance from none other than NCERT.
